I love my iPhone and am constantly amazed at what it can do. One thing it can't do on its own is play IndieSF. Fortunately there are now several applications in the iTunes App store that can play the IndieSF.com stream. Here are a few tips to get you started with these apps on your iPhone or iPod Touch.

You'll need to get an internet radio app from the iTunes App store to listen to IndieSF's PLS (Shoutcast) stream. Listening to IndieSF's stream works great over broadband WiFi networks at home, work, and the local café. If you're in a bigger city where AT&T provides a 3G network, you'll be able to listen while you're on the go. AT&T's old Edge network, like the one here in Santa Fe, can't reliably play IndieSF, or any other stream.

So grab an app and point it to http://listen.indiesf.com.

The iTunes App store has several stream playing apps which  ranging in price from $1 to $10 and so far I've only seen one that's free. FStream is that one free app. In my limited testing, FStream played IndieSF just fine.

I also downloaded and tried out an app simply named Radio. I'm glad I payed th $0.99 for Radio and I now use it as my primary player. After installation, here's how to start listening to the IndieSF.com stream:

1. Launch Radio and click the Streams button at the bottom of the screen.
2. Enter the Station Name and URL (http://listen.indiesf.com). The description is optional :)

   

3. Click Save and then click on IndieSF.com in the Streams list to stat listening, that's it!

   

Click the Star button in the upper-right corner to add IndieSF.com to Radio's favorite list and be sure to click the Share button 

Other Apps

There are several other apps that play MP3/PLS streams, like IndieSF's. I can't recommend any specifically but can say that I've been happy with other offerings from Rogue Amoeba, maker of Radioshift Touch. Make sure to check out the ratings and user reviews of each app before making a purchase.
